Santa Monica-based LIVESTRONG.COM , the online health and fitness site run by Demand Media, has updated the firm's MyPlate lifestyle management tool, the company announced this morning. The firm said the new tool also now integrates with LIVESTRONG Loops, the site's tool for finding local walking and running routes. LIVESTRONG said that it has added new custom receipe builders, an expanded food and activity database, and other features to the tool, which allows users to track what they are eating and how often they are exercising. The product development team behind Yahoo's news site, Yahoo News , has reportedly been moved to Taiwan , AllThingsD reported this morning. Yahoo's editorial team remains in Santa Monica. The move is the second one for product development at Yahoo News, which was previously located at Yahoo's media operations in Santa Monica. Yahoo had pulled development of the service out of its LA location in February, moving the UI and engineering design back to Sunnyvale.

Santa Monica-based Biddees , a new startup founded by a number of veterans from Shoes.com, has launched a new web site today focused on decreasing reverse auctions of gift cards. The site allows consumers to buy gifts cards from such companies as Amazon.com, Walmart, and other brand name retailers using a reverse auction, combined with donations to nonprofits. The The use of a bid credit decreases the price of those gift cards by 50 cents, and gives the user an option to then buy the card--or wait until that card has received other bids and decreases in price. Santa Monica-based DECA, a venture-backed, digital entertainment studio, said this morning that it has become the exclusive business and production partners for teen brand SMOSH, a leading provider of humorous videos on YouTube. DECA said that SMOSH has over 555,000 subscribers on YouTube, in addition to operating its own web site. According to DECA, it will provide financing, ad sales, marketing, distribution, and provide other business operations for SMOSH, which was created by Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. DECA is venture backed by Mayfield, General Catalyst, and Atomico.

When my friend Wil Schroter builds web sites, he's more concerned with attracting revenue than eyeballs. When we get together in person, I like talking to him about how he builds revenue-generating sites like goBIGnetwork.com , because he's so methodical about it.
That way, if a customer abandons the order after the first page, he knows he hasn't promoted his site's features well enough. For example, his order process is always split into two parts: the first page asks potential customers for their names, email addresses, etc, and the second page tells them the price and asks for the order.

Santa Monica-based Intent.com said Thursday that it has launched a new web site focused on wellness and social networking. The site--which was co-founded by Deepak Chopra's daughter, Mallika Chopra--said it is looking to create a community of like-minded members, blogs from wellness experts, and other curated online content. The new site fatures blog posting from Deepak Chopra, Olivia Newton John, Ed Begley Jr., Fran Drescher, and many other celebrities; the site will also feature articles from source such as Treehugger, DailyOm, Causecast, Good Magazine, and others.

Santa Monica-based Mahalo , the high profile "human-powered search engine" run by Jason Calacanis, rolled out a new, revamped site late Tuesday evening, offering to split advertising revenues with users who help to create pages on the site. Mahalo will allow users to claim and build pages for any topic on the site, supplementing the firm's use of employees and contractors to create pages. Mahalo has received funding from Sequoia Capital, Elon Musk, and News Corp., among others.

Santa Monica-based DECA has raised $10M in a new round of funding worth $10M, according to a regulatory filing. Among the firm's projects are the videos for popular blog site BoingBoing; BNET's Dog and Pony show; and Project Lore, a video games-focused site featuring Alex Albrecht, host of Diggnation. The funding was led by new investor Rustic Canyon Partners, with participation from Series A investors Atomico, General Catalyst Partners, and Mayfield Fund.
