The second event late February '10 was "Going Goo Goo over Google Analytics" and was held at Mahalo's office in Santa Monica. Despite threatening weather, five of us had a brisk nearly 3mi round-trip walk down the beautiful Beverly Gardens Park along Santa Monica Blvd. By invitation only; entry "Web Members" can only register for 2 events per year (but can be a guest of others). Recently, Santa Monica-based Docstoc (www.docstoc.com) launched a new marketplace on its site, for anyone interested in selling professional documents. That works like Docstoc, which is now probably the fastest growing web site for small businesses. We thought we'd get the background on the new effort directly from Jason Nazar , CEO and founder of Docstoc, to learn more about the new service. Jason is also behind the popular "Startups Uncensored" events in Los Angeles, so we also pinged him on how those events have been going.

Alec Shankman is CEO of Santa Monica-based Gotcast (www.gotcast.com), an online site focused on casting of actors for television shows, movies, and other productions. Amazon Webservices is hosting a The Start-Up Project event in Santa Monica on October 23rd, 2-7pm.

I went to an event by Amazon on their Amazon Web Services in Santa Monica today. The focus was S3 - storage service, EC2 - their compute cloud, their queuing system, and their flexible payment system. The S3 system is not a transactional object system, it's for larger objects, larger updates. The EC2 is very similar to having a Linux box in a colocation

Santa Monica-based DECA, a venture-backed, digital entertainment studio, said this morning that it has become the exclusive business and production partners for teen brand SMOSH, a leading provider of humorous videos on YouTube. DECA said that SMOSH has over 555,000 subscribers on YouTube, in addition to operating its own web site. According to DECA, it will provide financing, ad sales, marketing, distribution, and provide other business operations for SMOSH, which was created by Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. DECA is venture backed by Mayfield, General Catalyst, and Atomico.

Santa Monica-based Bestcovery.com , an online expert review and ranking site headed by former Pricegrabber.com co-founder and CEO, Kamran Pourzanjani, said today that it has rolled out a new widget which will allow web publishers to display its content. The new widget ties its expert reviews alongside content from Pricegrabber, which recommends those products based on the expert's pick. Bestcovery was started in 2008, and has 8 employees.
