By now we all know that the largest part of the online spend has been SEM (search engine marketing) where people buy CPC (cost per click) links to display alongside the “organic” search results in the search engine.  My believe that many social networks confused this idea.  They 8221;  Two problems seem to have emerged from this: 1) One of the investment themes I’ve been focused on in the past 3 years has been Performance-Based Marketing.  When When I started investing the US advertising market was $300 billion with only 10% of it ($30 billion) of it being online

Customer Acquisition – social media, SEO, SEM, etc I’ve been mulling over a new series* of posts that I’ve been wanting to create for sometime.  Lately I find myself now very crisply focusing on the issue of STRATEGY.  I love strategy - not in the McKinsey sort of way (all though I have tons of respect for those guys), but in a real-time iterative way.

But as the web evolves to the social web, social media connections are going to have an increasing weight on search result relevance. Let’s face it: social media strategy is going to cannibalize black hat and some current white hat SEO strategy. UPDATE #2:  Well, I am excited to see Social|Median was acquired yesterday.  I used them as a proof point of the power of context for social media startups.  Tonight I sat in on the Social Media Club LA panel on the Election and Social Media (thanks @jackiepeters ).  We took ours a Thats all I’m saying about context for now. UPDATE:  Now that the election is over, much is being discussed about the campaigns.
