CalTech MIT Enterprise Forum – Great events on various topics – there's one this Saturday that would be great to go to. AITP-LA – Monthly events. Often good topics and interesting networking. Southern California's top startups showed up in force Friday at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, for the Technology Council of Southern California's annual VentureNet conference. (socalTECH socalTECH was a media sponsor of the conference). The conference, held at the Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, featured pitches by eight different companies vying for the attention--and pocketbooks--of venture capitalists. The day started with a keynote by John Suh of Legalzoom.com, and topped off with a pitch from David Sacks -- CEO of Geni.com, and also CEO of Geni spinoff

I strongly disagree with Wil Schroter’s recent post on SoCalTech (SoCalTech.com ) that people are“eager to write checks.” The evidence of this broader reality is overwhelming and is directly contrary to Wil’s personal experience:
• Venture capitalists invested 48% less capital in Southern California during the third quarter with $458 million put into 66 deals (Dow Jones Q309)
• Dramatic move away from first time/early investments – 60% decline year over year in first time financing dollars (PWC MoneyTree)
• 13 year low in technology investing (Dow Jones09)
• Massive drop
