This question came up last week. I am hearing from my project management team a bit of distrust in the technical capacity of our web development team. I think we suffer because of the distance and culture but the project management team takes every late delivery or small bug as evidence that the development team may not be capable. My quick response was that this was likely some combination of: Weak development team Poor communication, especially around requirements and expectation setting Past failures (missed deadlines, bugs, downtime, etc.)

All executives want a software development organization that delivers high quality products with low cost in a timely manner. The leap from manufacturing to software development, however, has not been complete and has distorted our view of how to do this. Thursday, March 18, 2010 -- Lean-Agile: Using the Right Vision to Manage Transition. And it’s surprising how few startup founders think in those terms. And it becomes really important to have that granularity really fast. I’ve talked before about initial conversations with founders and the questions I’m likely going to ask Startup Software Development – Do Your Homework Before You Develop Anything . Tim Berry has a great post on Why I Hate Those Huge Market Numbers tells us that he doesn’t like to see business plans with multi-billion market numbers used as the basis for projections. I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a software development company who had produced a mess. The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out. I always take a very different approach in early conversations. If I’m being asked to do startup Some founders are taken aback. They are calling me to go build what they tell me to build.

Just saw a great post by Mark Geller - Developers wanted… in Los Angeles, U.S.A. (you can get to know Mark a bit more in my post Product Manager Entrepreneur Mark Geller ). Mark tells us: there is a lot of demand for developers right here in L.A. who would love to talk with you. There’s quite a bit of truth to what Mark is saying about startup software developers, but my guess is that If you have solid web skills and a few years experience, either with a commercial company or running your own legit projects, there are dozens of companies in L.A. reduced

This is a private group of CTOs who are responsible for software development within their companies. They are generally the senior most person responsible for custom software development, database design, database administration, web development, etc. In a recent conversation with a fellow CTO, we lamented about the fact that while there's very active software development and web development going on in Southern California and West Los Angeles, yet there didn't seem to be as much of a community around it. I've helped organize the Los Angeles CTO Forum for almost 10 years.
