It's been awhile since we last caught up with Los Angeles-based Language Weaver (www.languageweaver.com), a venture-backed firm which develops language translation software, so we sat down the other day with Mark Tapling , the President and CEO of the firm, to hear more about where the company is nowadays--plus its strategy for growth and an exit. Our continuing relationship with USC is precious in that regard. Language Weaver is backed by Palisades Ventures, the Tech Coast Angels, and The Athenaeum Fund.

Lookout , a firm developing security software for mobile phones and started by two recent USC graduates, has raised $5.5M in a funding , according to the New York Times this morning. According to the Times, the firm raised the new round of funding this month from Khosla Ventures. Lookout, formerly known as Flexilis, was based in Los Angeles, however, apparently is now listing its headquarters

Los Angeles-based Language Weaver , a developer of automated language translation software, is expanding its efforts to tap the online translation market, saying that it is in a strategic partnership with WorldLingo Translations. Language Weaver said its software will be included in WorldLingo's free online language translator, to help users translate text, documents, websites, and email. Financial details of the partnership were not disclosed. WorldLingo provides online translation services; Language Weaver, a spinout of USC, develops automated language translation tools.

Los Angeles-based Alelo, the USC spinout which is developing "serious" games to teach languages and cultures, has scored a contract with the Voice of America. The firm's software has so far been applied to Chinese, Iraqi, Pashto, and Dari. Alelo said Wednesday afternoon that its wholly owned subsidiary, Alelo TLT LLC, has been contracted to develop an interactive, Web-based learning portal for learners of English as a second language. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed.

Los Angeles-based Alelo , a USC spinout developing foreign language and culture training tools, said this week that it has opened an office in Suffolk, Virginia. Alelo's software uses computer gaming technology to help users learn languages and culture, and is being used by the military for training of troops being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as elsewhere in the world. Los Angeles-based Alelo , which develops computer software that uses video games to teach language and culture training for Iraqi and other languages, reported late Friday that it has received a contract from the U.S. Alelo's software--spun out of USC--uses first-person-shooter style video game engines to train users in both language and cultural nuances. Department of Defense for a handheld training system. Alelo said that the contract covers a system for teaching foreign language and culture which runs on iPhone and iPod devices.

Big Stage is a spinout of technology from USC, originally developed for the CIA. The firm's software allows users to upload photos to create their own, 3-D avatars, which can then be inserted into online greeting cards, scenes from movies, photos, and other media. Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment , the startup which uses photos to create animated, 3-D facial avatars of users, has added new content from a game from GGL Global Gaming. Big Stage told its users yesterday that they could now insert their avatars into content from Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, a video game
