so I feel I have an unbiased appreciation for BOTH Californias.
We have universities like CalTech, UCLA, USC and many more. We But LA is not Silicon Valley and we don’t need to aspire to be so. We So it’s always a trade-off. You Los Angeles. People People either love it our hate it. All

The University of Southern California is tapping C. Max Nikias, currently Executive Vice President and Provost of the school--and former Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering--as a replacement for outgoing President Steven B. Nikias was recruited to USC in 1991 to head up the school's Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), which conducts research in 3D modeling, augmented reality and virtual reality, video streaming, body tracking, and other areas.

He is a former chairman of the Business Software Alliance, and currently is Chair of the LA Chapter of the Technology Council of Southern California. The University of Southern California is reporting today that spinouts out of the school have raised $148m in the last two calendar years (2008-2009), and that there are now at least 24 USC spinouts currently in business. The school--which has been actively encouraging startup activity based on its research in recent years--said that 16 USC startups raised $148M, in a combination of new startup funding and additional rounds of financing for those companies. The school said that the 24 spinouts of the school employ approximately 500 full time employees, with at least 267 of those jobs in Los Angeles.

I’m always interested in how much more focus Silicon Valley companies get in the press–and mindshare–than companies located in Southern California, even among people here in the region.

One argument I hear quite frequently–usually from venture capitalists from Silicon Valley–that one of Southern California’s advantages is at the intersection of entertainment and technology. This usually is because the technologists in Southern California don’t hang out with the folks in Hollywood, and the typical folks in Hollywood wouldn’t know the first thing about a technology startup.
