He’s done several startups and is a board member of the Technology Council of Southern California (which is where I met him originally). like to book my own travel, so I might be on Expedia or on an airplane. So far, its been instrumental in expanding our reach, presence and brand, but I still believe that we must do it, but not sure exactly why yet. Great stuff! Not so that we can become discouraged but so that we can be prepared and thoughtful about how to overcome them. The evidence of this broader reality is overwhelming and is directly contrary to Wil’s personal experience:
• Venture capitalists invested 48% less capital in Southern California during the third quarter with $458 million put into 66 deals (Dow Jones Q309)
• Dramatic move away from first time/early investments – 60% decline year over year in first time financing dollars (PWC MoneyTree)
• 13 year low in technology investing (Dow Jones09)
• Massive drop

I want to take you through a bit of what brought me here, because I think it will help explain what I mean by visible networking. Networking Events – Questionable Return on Your Time Last week I posted about Networking Events in Los Angeles and Southern California and received back some interesting comments, some of the best from a LinkedIn Group. Mark mentioned Twiistup and VentureNet , but generally the room felt that it was hit and miss with all events. And when you think about the return on your time, it becomes even more discouraging. This past week has had an interesting confluence of events that's led me to conclude that I want to start doing a lot of visible networking among the tech / web crowd here in Los Angeles.

Only 12 companies will have the chance to convince the biggest gathering of technology investors to be assembled in Southern California this year that theirs is the company that deserves to be funded. One of the better opportunities here for companies to approach investors, VentureNet , recently opened up applications for the event, and it’s well worth a look by any aspiring startups looking for funding. The event, which is put on by the Technology Council of Southern California, allows companies to pitch what they’re doing to a panel and audience of investors. I’ve been involved in the event for the past few years, and we’re a media sponsor, but even aside from our involvement it’s one of those rare events which are geared not to just add to profits for a conference company, but truly meant to help companies here get out there and get funded.

Hi all–I have a few tickets to VentureNet –the venture capital conference being held Friday in Costa Mesa. If you’re an early stage entrepreneur who’d like to see how the companies pitch the VCs at this event, let me know–or, if you missed paying $3000 + whatever for a plane ticket to go to TechCrunch50 and hear Jason Calacanis speak, he’s the keynote for Venturenet.
