The USC Stevens Institute for Innovation , the effort of the University of Southern California to foster innovation within its campus and the community, has been turning an eye to how to more effectively spin out academic efforts into companies. Technology transfer and academic spinouts, despite their deep technology roots and barriers to entry, are notoriously difficult to get funded and spun out of universities. The institute said today that it has just published a white paper focused on helping universities to improve the spinout process, finding -- among other things -- that universities need to "get better at gathering, filtering, translating, and packaging new ideas."

The University of Southern California is reporting today that spinouts out of the school have raised $148m in the last two calendar years (2008-2009), and that there are now at least 24 USC spinouts currently in business. The school--which has been actively encouraging startup activity based on its research in recent years--said that 16 USC startups raised $148M, in a combination of new startup funding and additional rounds of financing for those companies. The school said that the 24 spinouts of the school employ approximately 500 full time employees, with at least 267 of those jobs in Los Angeles.

News & World Report at #11, and USC Marshall is ranked by U.S. We just posted an interview with a company (Scripped) with a little bit of both USC and UCLA — a USC film MFA with a UCLA Anderson MBA, but they are just the latest of many, many startups we encounter here which are driven by ambitious, energetic students coming out of the local universities, and in particular, their MBA programs.
As much as people debate how to get technology out of universities, it’s clear that People talk a lot how an area creates an environment conducive to startups and high tech entrepreneurship.

I’ve recently had a chance to reconnect with Eric David Greenspan ( LinkedIn , Twitter ) He’s the CEO of Make It Work a high quality, personal, high touch technology service provider for homes and small businesses. He’s done several startups and is a board member of the Technology Council of Southern California (which is where I met him originally). A great opportunity for more visible networking . I roughly know about MakeItWork, but tell me a bit about where you spend your time day-to-day. A typical day starts with email, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Yammer checks/updates.
