Los Angeles-based DTS , which develops surround sound technology, said today that it has signed on as an Executive Sponsor of USC's Entertainment Technology Center, an effort at the school to link entertainment, technology, and consumer electronics firms. The Entertainment Technology Center @ USC is part of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and was co-founded in 1993 with help from George Lucas. The center and DTS said the deal will allow DTS to participate in a number of its research, project, meetings, and other activities. Financial details were not disclosed.

According to the foundation, the new X PRIZE Lab@USC will include a semester-long course for undergraduates, enrolling students from both the School of Engineering and USC Marshall School of Business. The courses at USC will be managed by Viterbi School Senior Associate Dean Raghu Raghavendra, with courses run by Professors Gene Miller from Marshall, and Jon Lasch from Viterbi. The X Prize Foundation , the nonprofit which is managing a number of prize-based competitions to spur on scientific research and innovation, said Wednesday that it is launching a new lab program at the University of Southern Califonia Viterbi School of Engineering .

The DOE said the awards--which were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act--includes $19M given to UCSB, which will go towards discovering an developing materials that control the interactions between light, electricity, and heat at the nanoscale for improved solar energy conversion, solid-state lighting, and conversion of heat into electricity; and $12.5M, given to USC to explore the light absorbing and emitting properties of hybrid inorganic-organic materials for solar energy conversion and solid state lighting. The University of Southern California is reporting today that spinouts out of the school have raised $148m in the last two calendar years (2008-2009), and that there are now at least 24 USC spinouts currently in business. The school--which has been actively encouraging startup activity based on its research in recent years--said that 16 USC startups raised $148M, in a combination of new startup funding and additional rounds of financing for those companies. The school said that the 24 spinouts of the school employ approximately 500 full time employees, with at least 267 of those jobs in Los Angeles.
